 Hiller Sports Fishing Report

We are back to our weekly reports. I hope to update this page on a regular basis to keep you updated on the fishing here in Long Island Sound as well as offshore reports.

June 5, 2010

Bass fishing is still going great. Buoy 28C and the OB are hot spots. Bass are being cought on bunker and mackeral chunks fishing the drop offs at almost anytime of day and night. All the fish are 20 to 30 pounds with a couple tipping the scales at 40 pounds. If trolling is your game, try a bunker spoon or a shad rig. Not as many fish but they will be big. Troll them with wire line to get your rig deep.

Bluefish seem to be just about everywhere. They can be found on top in the evening outside of Goose Island and over at the golf course. Chunking is also getting the choppers while people are bass fishing.

The first weakfish I have seen in years has been taken on a worm in the Norwalk Harbor. Drift a sanworm on a fluke rig to catch these guys.

Fluke are still plentiful as well. The same spots have been producing big flats. 26, golf course and behind Copps Island.

If you have any reports of fish, please email me at tuna84@aol.com so I can include them in my reports. Also please send photos as a photo page is coming.

The word of then day is striped bass. The fish have moved into our area with reports coming in from Greens ledge, Buds reef, and the Cows. Fish can be caught into the 40 pound range as did Captain Frank did during the week. Kevin Bova fished in Stamford and had 20 fish to 30 pounds and Mark Hiller fished off Sheffield Island and had 14 fish to 20 pounds. A lot of smaller fish around the Islands. Cast Storm lures around the rocks and you will catch.

Fluke fishing on this side is a little slow but the fish you get are big. All the fish caught by buoy 26 have been 3 to 7 pounds. The other side is red hot but smaller fish. Port Jeff can 11 you can get as many fluke as you can stand to catch but all small. it is hard to get you 2 fish limit as all the fish seem to be cloned at 20 inches. The Nissequogue River is the same way. The Golf course has produced a few nicer fish but need a moving tide to  catch the big flats.

Bluefish seem to have made a pretty good showing. In midsound on a calm day you can find them swirling on top. Find the swirls, turn off your boat and start casting top water plugs or swimmer plugs and have fun. Most people chunking for bass are also picking up some bigger blues. 6 to 10 pounders. Shad and umbrella rigs are also producing a mix of bass and blues trolled on wire in the middle of the sound.

Last but not least, porgies have shown up over on the other side by the oil platform and by the golf course. They should be around here any time now if they are there.
